The Pyramid of Success

Block 1: Industriousness

"There is no substitute for work. Worthwhile results come from hard work and careful planning."

Industriousness is when some one is hard working, always busy and getting stuff done. "I think anyone's success depends on working hard, Industriousness and enthusiasm, enjoying what you're doing. You can not work your best if your not enjoying what you are doing. No way you can force yourself to." John Wooden. I think this quote is saying success comes from working hard towards doing what you enjoy doing instead of doing something you do not. When you do something you like you will but in the work. I will apply this block in my life by working hard and being busy on something I enjoy, for example working hard towards getting a career I enjoy.

Block 2: Enthusiasm

"It is the engine that powers all blocks of the Pyramid. It is why I chose Industriousness and Enthusiasm as the cornerstones of my Pyramid of Success. It is where everything begins."

Enthusiasm is a positive word it means when you are intense, eager, and enjoyment. "As a leader, you must be filled with energy and eagerness, joy and love for what you do. If you lack enthusiasm for your job, you cannot perform to the best of your ability. Industriousness is unattainable with out enthusiasm." John Wooden. This quote to me is saying that enthusiasm is key too doing what you enjoy in like. In my life enthusiasm is something I would ask myself if I am enthusiastic in the career I chose to take.

Block 3: Friendship

"Comes from mutual esteem, respect and devotion. Like marriage it must not be taken for granted but requires a joint effort."

Friendship a mutual affection between friends. "Friendship is two-sided. It isn't a friend just because someone's doing something nice for you. That's a nice person. There's friendship when you do for each other. It's like marriage it's two-sided." John Wooden. This quote to me is saying friendship doesn't just come up when you are nice to each other. Friendship is build when two people have the same ambitions and help each other get where they are trying to accomplish.

Block 4: Loyalty

"To yourself and to all those depending upon you. Keep your self-respect."

Loyalty the quality to being loyal to someone or something. "Loyalty is very important when things get a little tough, as they often do when the challenge is great. Loyalty is a power force in producing one's individual best and more so in producing a team's best." John Wooden. This quote to me is saying when things get hard in life its important to have loyalty towards people and people have loyalty towards you. The loyal people you trust can give you the hand and help you out in any difficult time. I'm only loyal to the people that are loyal to me, most importantly my family.

Block 5: Cooperation

"With all levels of your co-workers. Listen if you want to be heard. Be interested in finding the best way, not in having your own way. "

Cooperative the process of working together to the same end. "Cooperation- To get cooperation, you must give cooperation. Always seek to find the best way rather than insisting on your own way." John Wooden. This quote in my understanding is saying that cooperation is given to you when you give it to them. Cooperating with the right person is always better than do do things on your own.

Block 6: Ambition

(For noble goals)

Ambition a strong desire to do or to achieve something, typically requiring determination and hard work. "We should never let ambition cause us to sacrifice our integrity or diminish our efforts in other areas. However, we need to remember that we never reach a serious goal unless we have the intention of doing so." John Wooden. This quote is saying that we shouldn't let our ambition towards curtain things get in the way of doing bad things to get what we want.

Block 7: Self-Control

"Practice self-discipline and keep emotions under control. Good judgement and common sense are essential."

Self control the ability to control oneself, in particular one's emotions and desires or the expression of them in one's behavior, especially in difficult situations. "If you loose self control everything will fall." John Wooden. This quote is saying that when you are not able to control yourself, things will have a negative impact making everything fall  apart.

Block 8: Alertness

"Be observing constantly. Stay open-minded. Be eager to learn and improve."

Alertness being aware of people and circumstances so that i can have a right response to them.“Be observing constantly. Stay open-minded. Be eager to learn and improve.” John Wooden. This quote is saying that Alertness is something that you should be all the time.

Block 9: Initiative

"Cultivate the ability to make decisions and think alone. Do not be afraid of failure, but learn from it."

Initiative the ability to assess and initiate things independently. "Initiative is doing the right thing without being told." Victor Hugo. This quote is saying that initiative is something done by automatic actions and not by someone telling you to do something.

Block 10: Intentness

Intentness firmly or steadfastly fixed or directed, as the eyes or mind. Intentness is being determined and persistent. "Stay the course. When thwarted try again; harder; smarter. Persevere relentlessly." John Wooden. This quote is saying to never give up, you need to try harder every time you fail and smarter.

(keeps friends)

Sincerity is the virtue of one who communicates and acts in accordance with their feelings, beliefs, thoughts, and desires. "Sincerity may not help us make friends, but it will help us keep them." John Wooden. This quote is saying that sincerity can probably not help you gain friends but it will help you keep the friends you already have.

Block 12: Adaptability

(to any situation)

Adaptability the quality of being able to adjust to new conditions. "Adaptability is being able to adjust to any situation at any given time" (John Wooden). This quote is saying that at any time you will have to adjust yourself to any situation that is thrown at you.

Block 13: Condition

"Mental-Moral-Physical. Rest, exercise and diet must be considered. Moderation must be practiced. Dissipation must be eliminated."

Condition the circumstances or factors affecting the way in which people live or work, especially with regard to their well-being. "Condition comes from hard work during practice and proper mental and moral conduct between practices" (John Wooden). This quote is saying that conditions come from having a daily work out physically and mentally.

Block 14: Skill

"A knowledge of and the ability to properly and quickly execute the fundamentals. Be prepared and cover every little detail."

Skill the ability to do something well; expertise. Skill is not something you are born with, skill is something you develop when practicing what you want to have skill in.

Block 15:  Team Spirit

"A genuine consideration for others. An eagerness to sacrifice personal interests of glory for the welfare of all."

Team spirit feelings of camaraderie among the members of a group, enabling them to cooperate and work well together. "Team spirit means you are willing to sacrifice personal considerations for the welfare of all. That defines a team player." John Wooden.

"Honesty is the best policy." (Ben Franklin)

Honesty refers to a facet of moral character and connotes positive and virtuous attributes such as integrity, truthfulness, straightforwardness, including straightforwardness of conduct, along with the absence of lying, cheating, and theft. Being honest to the people you are surrounded by is the best thing you could do. Honesty is something I will live by everyday I wake up.

Block 17: Resourcefulness (proper judgment)

Resourcefulness the ability to find quick and clever ways to overcome difficulties. When growing up you always come by difficulties and its important to find fast ways to over come them.

Poise graceful and elegant bearing in a person. " Confidence- Poise and confidence are not possible unless you have prepared correctly. Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.
